WILLIAMSTON, SC: WPPB The Pulse is the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s Best High School Station for the third time in the last six years, receiving the honor recently at the organization’s 83rd Annual National Student Media Conference in New York City. WPPB was chosen over fellow finalists KRHS of Ritenour High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and WHJE of Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana.
The online station is part of The Anderson Districts 1 & 2 Career and Technology Center’s Media Broadcasting program, which also boasts an award-winning film department (Dungeon Films) and a live sports production network (Pulse Sports Network).
In addition to Best High School Station, WPPB was a finalist in 17 other categories, winning four. Palmetto junior Rylee Elrod won a pair of awards – Best News Feature Story for Chaos at the Well, and Best Radio Drama for the podcast Whodunnit with fellow Palmetto junior Jonathan Hayden; Best Talk Program went to the podcast Teen Takes, produced by Palmetto High School junior Porter Hand, Wren High School junior Rayne McLees, and Powdersville High School junior Caitlin James, and the podcast Mankind Unsolved by Palmetto juniors Colt Gouge and Nathan Fillinger won Best Logo.
Believed to be the only high school student-run radio station in South Carolina, WPPB is heard at mypulseradio.com and the TuneIn app. Started on October 11, 2012 by current instructor John Boone, the station has won dozens of national awards in various competitions as well as local community service awards.
