He looked me square in the eyes, leaned towards me, and in his smiling southern voice said, “All I have is today. All I’ve had was yesterday.” I had only known David Kimbrell for about two minutes. I felt his urgency in what he had to tell me.
Kimbrell began his story of a journey that started in the summer of 2023 when he first offered free haircuts to those experiencing homelessness at the Bridge Center at 2403 West Whitner in Anderson. That first session only lasted two hours, but it was a first step. Other two-hour barbering sessions followed as word spread and more Anderson individuals experiencing homelessness came to his two-hour sessions.
Kimbrell expanded his haircutting service to Anderson’s Labor of the Field Ministries in October 2023, the Hope Mission in January 2024, and the LOT Project in February 2024. He soon realized that the need was more extensive than one person could address alone. In March, he founded Cuts for Confidence, a nonprofit, aiming to extend this compassionate service to as many people as possible. It had become increasingly obvious that each haircut was more than a change in appearance. It was a step toward restoring confidence and sparking joy in the lives of those facing difficult times.
This meant setting up a website; recruiting barbers and hair stylists; and partnering with other missions, cosmetology schools, and businesses. It also meant sharing the transformative impact of CFC services and the stories of those they have been privileged to serve.
In addition to events at the above ministries, CFC has events scheduled at the Pickens County Shelter of Hope in Pickens on Saturday, June 1st, 10 am-noon and at the LOT Project in Anderson on Friday, June 7th, 10 am-noon. Other events are being planned for the Dream Center in Easley, Southeastern Children’s Home in Duncan, and Project Host in downtown Greenville.

CFC has recently partnered with the Upstate School of Cosmetology and New Trends Academy in Easley, Daniel Morgan Technology Center, Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology, and ten salon/barber shops across the Upstate. On CFC’s radar is creating partnerships with top industry leaders and exclusive vendors for the Ultimate Charity Hair Show in Charleston in June 2025. That event will showcase cutting-edge trends and top talent while supporting CFC’s mission to provide free haircuts to those in need.
Also on the CFC radar is a Spinks Family Foundation fundraiser. Coming soon.
As we shook hands goodbye, I congratulated Kimbrell on CFC’s amazing first-quarter progress and jokingly asked, “So when do you sleep?”
He grinned, “Sleep? Not much time for that – I have a regular job. I operate heavy construction equipment!”
David Kimbrell lives by his motto, “All I have is today. All I’ve had was yesterday.” He is proof that one person with a vision and a plan CAN make a difference in many lives, in our city, our state, and beyond. His is a mission of Good, and I intend to follow him and update his progress as his vision and mission continue to expand.
