Tank Away Getaway

Flight Away Getaway – Quick Flight to Memphis

Have you been to Memphis lately? It’s not a long or pricey flight and with the hour time difference from the East Coast you gain an hour to sight see!

First let’s start with a great place to stay, the South’s Grand Hotel – The Peabody Memphis. They deliver on everything you could possibly expect from a hotel with their long-standing reputation and list of famous guests. We visited for just a few days during Christmas time and if you can do that plan for this time of year. Stepping into the lobby is like stepping into a Christmas card. Tastefully decorated in rich reds and Christmas greens the spirit of the holiday will welcome you with every step you take inside.

The rooms are cozy and very tastefully decorated, and honestly for the price you can’t beat the Peabody. If you stay on the Peabody Club Level, you’ll have your coffee available when you’d like along with Peabody bottled water, soft drinks, and snacks. To start your day, they’ll set out several selections for breakfast followed by different snack options throughout the day and finishing off the evening with cocktails and appetizers. A little fun thing no matter what floor you stay on, you’ll spot ducks all over the place, but more on that later.

But you’ll want to be sure to venture off your floor and check out the Lobby Bar that is situated adjacent to the duck pond. The Lobby Bar is the best place to sit a night for the ducks evening walk back to their penthouse. Enjoy one of their custom duck cocktails or a fabulous glass of wine while taking in the ducks and doing some people watching.

If you are wondering “ducks?” and aren’t familiar with the famous Peabody Ducks, you really will love seeing their march in and out each day. Their Duck Master is just the perfect person for this position too. Listening to his story telling about the history behind this and his “wrangling” of these cute little webbed feet waddlers is almost as good as watching the ducks march off to the elevator for their ride back up to their rooftop private penthouse.

In addition to the Lobby Bar the Peabody has several other dining options, Capriccio Grill, The Peabody Corner Bar and Peabody Deli and Desserts, and Chez Philippe. Chez Philippe is the MidSouth’s only Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond rated restaurant and has been honored with the “Award of Excellence” from both Distinguished Restaurants of North America and Wine Spectator magazine. In 2023, USA Today named Chez Philippe the #1 “Best Hotel Restaurant” in the country.

If you want something more casual stop in the Peabody Corner Bar. This little gem is literally tucked away in the corner of the Peabody and offers some great music at night in addition to their specialty craft cocktails and unique Jack Daniels Peabody Select Single Barrel, selected by members of the Peabody team and bottled exclusively for the Peabody.

While in Memphis you’ll want to venture out of the hotel some to see the sights. The hotel concierge has some great tips on unique places to visit, eat, see while in town, many within walking distance of The Peabody.

Of course, when you go to Memphis the one place that is a must, Graceland. Elvis’s homestead is quite the site to see! As you tour the property and hear the stories from the guides you can just imagine Elvis, Pricilla and family enjoying this private oasis. This is a “must see for yourself” type of place. It’s so hard to put into words the majestic feel of this home. There are several tour options available to choose from. Whichever one you choose you will certainly enjoy a day of touring this truly magical home.

Taking a tour and seeing the actual china they ate on, seeing Lisa Marie’s teddy bear still sitting her favorite chair is quite a feeling. Then there is Elvis’s “man cave” which puts many of today’s man caves to shame. Multiple TV screens, bar area, an elaborately detailed pool room with a unique but stunning sound proofing, and the original pool table with a small tear in the green that you can hear all about in the tour.

Before ending your day at Graceland be sure to leave time to visit his personal jets, car collection and the many shops, all of which are located on the same side as the entrance to Graceland tours. There are even a few places to grab a bite if you’d like to make a full day of it. And yes, there is a spin on Elvis’s favorite sandwich, if you know, you know.

After a day of walking around Graceland and sometime checking out Memphis there is no better end to your stay at the Peabody then a visit to Feathers Spa, named one of the top 10 Spas of 2023 by Spas of America, Feathers Spa at The Peabody offers a variety of luxurious spa and salon treatments, including massages, body wraps, facials and facial enhancements, and wax treatments. One of the highlights among the Feathers’ treatments is Vichy Shower Bed complete with steam massage and chromo light therapy and aromatherapy that creates a multi-sensory hydrotherapy for the whole body. The options for the ultimate pampering and relaxation are endless. While waiting for your service to start you can sip on some champagne or a mimosa and relax in the lounge before beginning your bliss. I found my bliss with a truly euphoric massage. I followed that up with some time in the sauna. Nothing like time in a truly Zen spa to finish off a quick flight away getaway on the right note.

Don’t take my word for it, investigate booking your flight today – or plan your driving route if you so desire – and take in all that Memphis has to offer.
