Essentials of Road-Tripping with Pets

When the weather gets warm, the family gets antsy. It’s road-trip season! This year make sure the whole family gets in on the fun. Yes, even the dog. Not only will your fur baby prefer to go on adventures with their family, but you will have the peace of mind knowing your pet is in the hands of the best caretaker around; you! To make road-tripping with Fido as enjoyable as possible, here are a few tips and tricks to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Before you leave, take a quick trip to the vet to ensure that your pup is up to date on all of their vaccinations and is healthy enough to endure traveling. If your pet needs any medications, this would also be a good time to make sure you have plenty to get through the vacation. You’ll also want copies of all your pets’ medical records. Additionally, plan the route ahead of time to ensure that every stop is pet friendly. Read up on the rules and regulations of your final destination; you don’t want to get there and find out your pup can’t partake in all the fun. Here are some links to websites that can help you locate pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, and excursions: https://www.bringfido.com/ and https://dogfriendly.com/.

When packing for the trip, make sure you have-

  • Food and water bowls
  • Your dog’s regular pet food
  • Durable toys
  • Brushes and grooming supplies (Molly & Me Dog Bakery and Grooming carries some excellent options!)
  • Treats
  • A blanket and dog towel
  • Waste bags
  • Pet first-aid kit
  • Travel crate/dog seat belt
  • Leash, collar with updated tags, and a harness

During your travels, make sure that you take plenty of stops to let your pup use the bathroom and stretch their legs. Remember to never leave your pet unattended in the car and they should always have access to water and toy.

Traveling with pets doesn’t have to be stressful. The packing and planning take a few hours, but the memories you make with your pup will last a life time.
