October begins in the peak of the annual Hurricane Season and ends with the fun of Halloween.
Here’s an award-winning poem by Anne Brent Wright, a former guild president, vp, treasurer, and Gold Quill Award for Leadership recipient. Her poem is about one of our state’s most destructive hurricanes, Florence, in 2018, followed by a festive poem about Halloween.
Florence

Though the Carolinas coast showed the sun’s rays,
The threat of this hurricane was news for days.
Evacuations began to get us all out of towns
and go well inland to higher ground – from Florence.
Homes and buildings were boarded up.
We packed in a hurry, plus kittens and pups.
Trucks and cars were a ribbon of headlights,
On highways and back roads we made our flight – from Florence
Wind and water devastated our land.
Strong waves and high surges took our white sand.
For days, the rains came, many were lost
Unforgettable floods, unspeakable cost – from Florence

Halloween spirits, ghosts, and cats,
Weird-happenings and witches brew,
These are the things I wish for you.
May the only spirit you chance to meet,
Be the spirit of love and warm friends sweet.
May the tricks that you are asked to do,
Be a trick that gains a friend or two.
So, this Halloween, pick three friends sweet,
And give them all a Halloween treat.
